Jonny miles-proutenMarcomms Manager at Royal Mail

BA (Hons) Geography, University of Leicester, graduated 2004

Career history
Following the 2004 Summer School I gained an Account Executive position at TEQUILA\ London, which proved to be a fantastic start to my career. The next three years saw me work mainly on The Army recruitment account, running their award-winning CRM scheme for teenagers – Camouflage. From there I went on to Craik Jones where I entered FMCG territory, working on a number of high profile Unilever brands - most notably PG tips, Knorr and Sure - gaining a great deal of digital experience in the process.

Now 5 years since doing the IDM Summer School I work for a similar agency, Proximity London, where I'm currently on a year long client secondment to Royal Mail, working in their marketing team as a Marcomms Manager. This has been a great experience for me to see life on the 'other side' and to see the bigger picture. There's no doubt that without the IDM Summer School I wouldn't be in the position I am now - it gave me the break I needed to get my career started.

Training and development
My training and development in DM began with the Summer School – in fact that was my first real exposure to DM since I did a Geography degree. I have since completed the ISP Diploma and crucially the IDM Diploma in Direct and Interactive Marketing too. The IDM Diploma was a real commitment over the period of almost a year, but was very valuable in understanding the ‘why’ of my job.

MA (Distinction) Marketing and Advertising, Leeds University Business School
IDM Direct and Interactive Marketing Diploma (Distinction)

Career history
Following the 2006 IDM Summer School, I was selected as a graduate trainee at leading direct marketing agency Rapp. Over 14 months I had the opportunity to work in the agency’s key departments – from Account Management and Planning to Creative and Media – gaining hands-on experience in London and New York. As an account manager my experience encompassed on and offline CRM campaigns for national charities (NSPCC, Blue Cross, Crisis) and developing global healthcare support programmes for sufferers of macular degeneration and Parkinson's disease. In Spring 2009 I moved into marketing data operations at Quant Presky Maves, an independent data-driven agency, account managing IKEA's customer loyalty programme across five European territories and co-ordinating customer experience research for two national utility companies.

With nearly three years experience, I feel I have learnt tons about direct marketing but am fully aware that I have only seen the tip of the iceberg. It is good to know that there is still a vast amount to discover; this line of work promises to always keep me on my toes. I’m tremendously grateful to the IDM Summer School for helping me find a path into the industry.

Training and development
I supplemented my MA study with the IDM Certificate in Direct Marketing Principles, which gave me a really good grounding in the basic nuts and bolts of DM. Since then my training has all come through being thrown in the deep end at work on live campaigns. I recently completed the IDM Direct and Interactive Marketing Diploma - hands down, the most challenging qualification I have ever undertaken - but it was a mind-broadening, fascinating and invaluable experience.

BSc (Hons) Management (Marketing specialism) UMIST graduated in 2003

Career history
After attending the IDM summer school in 2004 I got my first job at TEQUILA\ London as a Junior Account Executive working on Intel. I grew into my first agency role quickly having a lot of autonomy and responsibility to help deliver a pan-European CRM website for Intel Retailers across EMEA. During my 4 years at TEQUILA\ I worked on a variety of accounts and multi-discipline campaigns. My clients included Unilever, Gala Bingo and Lastminute.com and the work spanned integrated campaigns, to CRM programmes and database analysis and integration. I got a firm grounding in all aspects of direct and digital marketing.

I have now been working at Partners Andrews Aldridge an award winning creative and strategic agency for 1.5 years. I am now an Account Director running the flagship Vodafone account and managing a team of people to deliver CRM campaigns to Vodafone’s Enterprise customer base. My work has moved into more strategic planning where I use knowledge from the IDM Diploma in effective campaign planning.

Training and development
Having studied a Marketing degree I have always had a passion to learn about the theory as well as the practice of Marketing. Attending the IDM summer school cemented my passion for working in Marketing. I learnt more about the Direct Marketing industry and I fell in love with the ability to deliver campaigns that were measurable so I could be accountable for the results. During my time at TEQUILA\ I was given the opportunity to further enhance my knowledge and skills by completing the IDM Diploma in Direct and Interactive Marketing. Having completed the Diploma I feel I have a full rounded knowledge of the principles as well as best practice in Direct Marketing.
