Profiles

Bryan Foss

Bryan Foss Non-Executive Director, Board Development Advisor and Visiting Professor of Marketing at various commercial, public sector and other boards.

Education and career
Following a near-miss with accountancy I progressed through IT technical, financial, sales and business development roles, eventually finding B2B marketing as a profession that would round off my personal board skills, enabling me to deal with other board members within the most important clients, partners and suppliers of my organisation.

Typical day
No two days are the same - when I don’t have a breakfast meeting I can miss the commute but find myself attending at least a couple of evening networking or self-development events every week – where I may be presenting, debating or listening.

As I have a portfolio of mixed roles I have to pre-read before meetings and absorb updates very quickly in order to make situation assessments and offer immediate advice or assistance. Even after the meeting I need to follow up with emails and phone calls to keep activities moving forward before the next planned checkpoint.

A good understanding of the capabilities of marketing have helped impact board understanding and decisions related to stakeholder dialogue, business planning, know your customer, customer experience and complaints management, debt collection and more.

Best thing about the job
Definitely the variety, skills and support of the people I’ve been able to work with, learn from and help. When working internationally there is also a challenging cross cultural dimension to business and relationships. Every relationship and situation brings a new variation and challenge, even where this can be addressed with experience.

Worst thing about the job
I tend to get interested and challenged by too many opportunities – and to prevent missing any agreed objectives or letting people down I end up working very long hours and not taking enough time out for personal relaxation.

Future plans
Quite a few more years of non-executive board director roles yet, as this is one job where having grey hair or no hair you seem to look more appropriate for it.

Qualifications
Fellow IoD, Fellow IDM, Fellow CIM, Fellow BCS, CEng, MBA
